Day 23: Whiteboard UX Challenge | Part 3
Design thinking over UI skill
Similar to days 11 and 12. We take another brief look at whiteboard challenges. This is common in the last stages of a design interview, lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. During the challenge, the interviewer is looking for the following signs to show that you understand basic design principles and what it means to use design thinking:
Do you ask questions to get clarity on the goal?
Do you focus on users and their contexts?
Do you make valid assumptions and ask the right questions?
Do you understand basic design principles and patterns?
Do you mention weaknesses and improvements in your solution?
It is not an assessment of your UI skill
Approaching a Whiteboard Challenge
Start by articulating the problem
Understand the context
Set assumptions and constraints
Involve the designer or interviewer
Articulate your main steps throughout the journey
Draw key screens or user flows. Beware of edge cases
Summarize
Don'ts
Don't work in silence. Speak out loud
Don't start crafting the solution straight away
Don't forget to engage in time checks
Key learnings
This challenge is beneficial as I learn concepts I am familiar with to gain a deeper understanding. Learning never stops, and I am happy to push myself as far as possible.
